Athletics
Basketball – The Lady Pharaohs will start district play tonight at Livonia Clarenceville (on Middlebelt between 7 & 8 Mile) at 7:30 p.m.  The ladies will face Detroit Community in the first round of the playoffs.  MHSAA District games are scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, and the championship will be Friday.  You must win to stay in the playoffs.  The boys’ basketball team will close out their home season with Central on Tuesday at 4:00.  Advance tickets will be $3.00 (CMA students only with I.D.) and $5.00 at the door.

Salute to Seniors – All CMA Senior Athletes from the fall and winter sports will be honored at the game along with their parents.  Tuesday game will be “Senior Day”.  A small reception will follow the game for senior athletes, parents, staff and administrators.  The seniors also chose to honor Breast Cancer Survivors as well.  Please come out and salute our seniors for their last home game.

Spring Sports Conditioning – All students are still welcome to participate in the spring sports conditioning programs.  In order to participate, each student must have a physical on file in the Athletic Office for the 2009-2010 school year.  You must also have a 2.0 G.P.A. from the January 2010 cardmarking.  All transfer students must see Ms. Turner for clearance.

After School Incidents Unbecoming of an Athlete – Any student involved in any illegal activity will forfeit his or her athletic season.  Any athlete involved in a fight during an athletic contest will also forfeit his or her athletic season.  Depending on the incident itself, it may also cost the team that they play on their season as well.  We are not all going to agree on everything.  We are all not going to see the same situation in the same manner.  Let’s agree to disagree and move on.  Fighting is not worth your whole season, nor is it worth the season of your teammates.

Athletic Eligibility Audit – All DPS School Athletic Departments will be going through an Eligibility Audit.  Additional forms will be sent home with each child participating in a winter or spring sport.  The packet must be completed in order for each child to participate.  Additional information will be sent as soon as the packet is completely assembled.  This is a district mandate.

Student Safety:
It has come to our attention that two young ladies (non-CMA students) were approached by several males in a car.  One young lady was walking and the other was at the bus stop.  The incident happened on Grand River near the school between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.  We ask that parents and students be aware of their surroundings coming and going to school.

On Friday, at dismissal there was a car accident in front of the building.  The accident was not serious.  However, we’re asking that parents please practice safe driving.  Do not try to make u-turns, speed or double park during dismissal or at the start of school.  Watch out for students and other drivers.

 Picture I.D. Cards:
Those students who are currently using temporary I.D.’s will have the opportunity to take picture I.D.’s on Tuesday, January 26, 2010.  You must have your temporary I.D. with you in order to get a new picture I.D.

 Reading Material Appropriate for School:
One of the schoolwide reading strategies is an opportunity for sustained reading.  In some classes students may bring in their own reading materials.  We ask that any reading material brought in is appropriate for school.  We ask student’s not to bring explicit reading material to school for sustained reading.

Remember our reading strategy for home:  Read for at least 35 minutes per day everyday at home.

 Dress Code:
Boys wearing zip up sweaters must have on collared shirts underneath the sweater and their shirts tucked in.  Violators will be subject to disciplinary action.  Also, we remind parents and students that coats may not be worn in class.  Finally, sweaters worn in school must be solid in color and must be purple, black or white.

 Textbook Issues:
We still have students who have not received report cards due to textbook issues.  Payment for the textbook or returning the textbook issued to the student are the only solutions to textbook issues.

 Fundraiser for Haiti:
On Monday, February 8, 2010 CMA will have a CMA Community Fundraiser.  All of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross for the victims of the terrible Earthquakes in Haiti.  Some of the suggested activities for the day are:

Final Exams-1/2 Days:
CMA students will be engaged in final exams on Tuesday, January 5, and Wednesday, January 6, 2010.  The schedule for the Tuesday exams is hours 1, 2 and 3.  School will be dismissed at 10:30 a.m.  The schedule for Wednesday exams is hours 4, 5 and 6.  School will be dismissed at 10:30 a.m.

 Returning Textbooks:
Parents and students are reminded to turn in school issued textbooks for each class during finals.  Students who do not return the textbook they were issued must pay for the textbook.  Students who do not return textbooks or pay for the book will not receive their report card and their academic records will be placed on a “hold” status.

Free H1N1 Flu Shots at CMA:
On Thursday, January 7, 2010 CMA will be the site for H1N1 Flu Shots.  Flu Shots will be given  from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. by the Detroit Health Department.  Anyone receiving the H1N1 Flu Shot must complete the two page registration form.  Registration forms and information letter will be distributed to all students today, Monday, January 4, 2010.  We advise all of our students to take advantage of this opportunity to get the H1N1 Vaccine at no cost.  H1N1 Shots are also available to the general public.

 Bilingual Survey:
The district’s Department of Bilingual Services is attempting to determine what students are entitled to bilingual services.  Each CMA will be given a two question survey that should be completed and returned to school by Thursday, January 7, 2010.  Students may return the surveys to their first hour teachers on or before Thursday.  Some key students have already taken the survey and do not need to take the survey twice.

Reading Data Shows CMA Students Need To Read More:
Data from a recent reading diagnostic exam given to CMA students shows only 115 out of 397 (or approximately 30%) students tested are reading on the high school level (grades 9 to 12).  This is a problem we must all work on together, students, teachers and parents.  The school has made reading a priority.  We like parents and students to engage in a reading strategy that is used in Finland (this country has the highest literacy rate in the world).  The strategy is that each student engage in sustained reading for a minimum of 35 minutes each day.  This kind of reading is best done at home for high school students because it is not always possible to do on a constant basis in school due the number of classes and the nature of those classes.  Let’s increase our children’s reading skills by reading for 35 minutes everyday.

 Motown Pictures from Last Year:
The Motown Photography Company delivered several photo packets from last year’s Buddy Buddy Picture Day.  Students who have not received their picture packet from last year may pick up their pictures in the main office at the end of the day.  Parents and students are reminded that the school is not responsible for picture packets, it is the sole responsibility of the Motown Photography Co.

Temperature in the building:
We have received several calls regarding the temperature in the building.  We’ve been dealing with this situation since early November.  The problems have been reported and district tradesmen have been working on our heating situation.  A major problem in resolving the heating problem is the age and the availability of some of the operating parts for our heating system.  Some of the parts are obsolete and have to be rebuilt and some parts can’t be found.  This has caused some parts of the building to become colder than other parts.  We suggest students wear long sleeve tops or sweaters (colors should align with CMA dress code).  We certainly apologize for the inconvenience; please know that we are working to resolve our heating situation.

Welcome Back:
The entire CMA Staff would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our old and new students and parents back to CMA for the 2009-10 school year our district and school will face challenges unlike any we’ve faced in the past.  However, we look forward to working with all of the CMA stakeholders with the continuing focus of increased student achievement and making CMA one of the best schools in the district.

 Principal’s Vision:
The vision for Communication & Media Arts High School is to establish a professional learning organization that promotes learning of its members.  The organization’s primary focus is student learning and achievement based on researched best instructional practices and student advocacy.  It is an organization that nurtures its students through academic engagement.  In this learning organization students will voluntarily demonstrate engagement rather than compliance to instruction.  The organization will instill in its instructional leaders the willingness to provide engaging, student centered instructional practices, tasks and strategies.  The principal will act as the leader of instructional leaders providing support, direction and resources.

Communication and Media Arts High School will also pursue the engagement of parents, guardians and the community as a supplemental support system to enhance this professional learning organization.  The entire process will be carried out in a physical setting that is clean, safe and otherwise conducive to academic excellence.

 Mission Statement:
Communication and Media Arts mission is to provide an atmosphere which promotes academic and creative achievement, as well as social and emotional growth through a positive and caring environment, preparing students:

  • To become proficient writers, speakers and thinkers.
  • To be able to understand and analyze human, social, literacy and political issues.
  • To see themselves as lifelong learners.
  • To work collaboratively.
  • To set goals for themselves and work towards attaining those goals.
  • To be responsible decision-makers.

 New Staff:
There are several new staff members to the CMA faculty this year.

Assistant Principal, Ms. D. Odom

10th Grade English Teacher, Dr. Williams

Chemistry Teacher, Ms. Martin

Management Support Teacher, Ms. Powers

Spanish 1 and 7 Teacher, Ms. Guevara

CMA Makes A.Y.P.:
Accolades to CMA’s Senior Class whose combined scores on the A.C.T., M.M.E., and Work Keys standard tests earned CMA Phase 3 delay status.  This status means that if this year’s juniors score well on those same standardized tests, CMA will earn Phase 0 status which is the highest achievable AYP status.  The following are the targeted A.Y.P. scores for ELA (English Language Arts) and Math, and the scores earned by our seniors:

Target Scores              ELA  61%        Math  55%

Scores Earned             ELA 71%         Math 61.3%

Also calculated in the A.Y.P. scores is the graduation rate, which is above 95% and the percentage of students that took the MME, which was 98%.

 Dress Code:
Parents and students are reminded of CMA’s 2009-10 dress code.  Black bottoms and purple, black or white tops with collars.  The complete dress code was mailed out to each students home this summer.  Copies of the dress code can be obtained in the main office.  Students who violate the dress code will not be allowed to attend classes without a disciplinary consequence.

 Early Start Time:
As a cost saving measure all Detroit Public Schools high schools will start at 7:30 a.m.  CMA will start the early schedule on Monday, September 21, 2009.  School will start at 7:30 a.m. and end for students at 2:02 p.m.

 LSCO Meeting:
The first LSCO meeting for the 2009-10 school year will be Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Blue Room.  Parents may enter the building through the double blue doors of the teacher’s parking lot, located on the St. Mary’s side of the building.

 Cell Phones:
Due to a reduction in staff, cell phones that are confiscated will be returned to parents on Thursdays between 3:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m.  We urge parents and students to either leave cell phones at home or keep them out of sight during the school day.  Remember it’s not just a CMA rule, it is also a violation of the district’s Student Code of Conduct.

 Open House:
CMA
High School will host its Annual Open House on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

 Student Parking:
A reminder to parent’s and students, CMA does not offer student parking.  Student’s who choose to drive to school must park on the street and adhere to all of laws and regulations pertaining to street parking.

 Student Schedule Adjustments:
Adjustments to student schedules and class leveling will be conducted throughout the next few weeks.  We hope to have schedule and classes leveled by September 21, 2009.

Picture I.D. Card Rescheduled:
Due to circumstances beyond our control, picture I.D. cards for the remaining CMA students who have not gone through the process was postponed for the December 18, 2008 date.  A new date has not been established.  Once a date is established we will either notify students through the student board or the Parent Newsletter, depending on the date.  Student should continue to use their temporary I.D.’s until picture I.D. cards are taken.

Lost Textbooks:
All students are required to turn in the textbooks that were issued to them at the beginning of the semester, by each teacher.  Textbooks should be turned in during finals.  Students who do not return textbooks must pay for the cost of the textbook.  Students who do not return or pay for textbooks will not receive a report card and a “hold” will be placed on their academic records.

 November ACT Results:
In November, the CMA junior class took a retired ACT exam.  The individual results of this exam were mailed to each student’s home during the holiday break.  As a whole the results of this exam indicated the need for continued academic focus towards the March MME/ACT Exam.  The following are the overall performance results:  (The scores are based on a scale from 0 to 36).

  • Composite Score           16
  • Math                            15
  • Science                         16
  • English                          17
  • Reading                        14

These scores are far from being acceptable.  Teachers were given the data from this exam to help pinpoint specific academic needs for the ACT. CMA will be given a second retired ACT exam in early February.

All juniors are expected to take the exam in February to prepare for MME/ACT in March. Students and parents should be alerted that according to the revised State School Aid ACT,   the MME can only be offered once to students, which makes the March Exam extremely important.

This legislative decision may also jeopardize the $4,000.00 “Michigan Promise Grant” in a student 12th grade year since the Exam cannot be taken more than once.
